News for Murray, Kyler
The Athletic’s Ted Nguyen said Kyler Murray has been “constantly late on his reads,” leading to misfires.

Nguyen studied Murray’s film in the Minnesota offense and noted the veteran is often late to reocognize an open pass catcher. That could be related to Murray’s clear discomfort in Kevin O’Connell’s offense, as Nguyen noted. “When his first read doesn’t open up, he holds the ball and runs backwards,” leading to drive-killing sacks. That’s exactly what unfolded a few times in high-leverage situations against the Lions in Week 8. Justin Jefferson on Sunday appeared frustrated by Kyler’s inability to make the proper reads on critical downs. All of this has an outsized impact on Murray’s fantasy prospects. He now ranks 31st among QBs in expected fantasy points per game, below Bo Nix and Daniel Jones.

Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell said Kyler Murray is dealing with a sore hamstring and will undergo further evaluation.

Murray appeared to be slowed a bit by an injury in Week 8’s loss to the Lions, so this news isn’t all too surprising. O’Connell said Murray will go “through a full eval” of everything to determine the severity of his injury, but didn’t suggest this will cost Murray any time as the Vikings prepare to face the Bills next Monday night. That said, we know how these types of injuries can linger and lead to some missed time, so we won’t jump to assume Murray is in the clear for Week 9. In the event he can’t go, Carson Wentz would be in line to draw the start against Buffalo.

The Athletic’s Alec Lewis believes Kyler Murray is still “acclimating to the [Vikings’] progression-based passing game.”

Minnesota’s offensive ineptitude has reached stunning levels in recent weeks, including last Sunday against the Colts, when Murray had 150 yards and a touchdown while completing 58 percent of his pass attempts. “We’ll continue to get better,” Murray said Sunday night. “I know we will. I know we keep saying that, but I felt like we moved the ball well (against the Colts). We’ve just got to put the ball in the end zone.” The Vikings, who rank 25th in pass rate over expected this season, have operated conservatively on offense while their defense dismantles opponents week in and week out. As Lewis pointed out, the 2026 Vikings are the first team in a century to win five straight games with five or fewer TDs over that span. Murray through Week 7 ranks 28th out of 40 qualifying QBs in EPA per pass attempt and 33rd in fantasy points per drop back.

Kyler Murray completed 27-of-37 passes for 247 yards in the Vikings’ 15-10, Week 4 win over the Dolphins, adding six rushes for 16 yards.

The Dolphins’ pass rush made life tougher than expected for the Vikings’ signal caller. Murray managed to turn a few extended plays into successful scrambles, but he also took four sacks, at times simply holding the ball too long. As the game progressed, Murray locked in on T.J. Hockenson when the pass rush was closing in, linking up with him 13 times for 119 yards. The duo should have shared a late touchdown, but Hockenson smartly downed himself at the Dolphins’ five-yard line, so Murray could kneel out the clock from there. Murray will be a high-end QB2 against the Saints next week.

The Ringer’s Tom Pelissero reports Kyler Murray has cleared concussion protocol and will start in Week 3 against the Buccaneers.

The 2-0 Vikings will hopefully get their first full look at Murray, who exited in Week 1 after just 11 snaps. Murray will face a Buccaneers defense that ranks 24th in points allowed through the first two weeks and has allowed the 11th-most passing yards and the 10th-highest net yards per pass attempt. Murray has a nice supporting cast to work with and brings plenty of rushing upside, but fantasy managers shouldn’t view him as anything more than a mid-QB2 until we see how he functions in his first full game or two with the team.
